A 10-weeks study was conducted to determine the effect of varying dietary protein and energy levels on performance of growing giant African land snail (GALS), Archachatina marginata. One hundred and forty-four snails with mean weight of 138.48g were used for this study.

Snails are cold-blooded animals with soft body consisting of outer shell known as exoskeleton. Climatic conditions leading to changes in the environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity create physiological and biochemical adjustments, during this condition snails aestivate.

The study was carried out to determine the growth performance cost implication of feeding snails with different protein levels with the same energy level. A total of 150 snails of the same weight and breed were randomly allotted to 5 different groups.

CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL FEEDS IN SNAIL NUTRITION: A REVIEW
Feeding is one of the major factors affecting snail growth, egg production, and attainment of early maturity. Snails have been described as nocturnal that feed mainly in the night, at dusk, or by day when there is rain or if the sky is overcast. The digestive system is well developed; numerous teeth like projections called […]

A study was conducted on the development of methodologies for lethal and non-lethal haemolymph collection in giant African land snail (Archachatina marginata). Twentyseven (27) snails, were allocated into three groups (G1, G2 and G3) with weight ranges of 100 – 200g (G1); 201-300g (G2) and 301-400g (G3) with each having three replicates of 3 snails […]

Wound healing is the process of repair that follows injury to the skin and other soft tissues. Giant African land snail parts are useful in the treatment of diseases like anemia, hypertension, labor pain constipation and wound.

ABSTRACT This paper reviewed the “impact of snail size on reproduction as an aspect of breeding and management of giant African land snails” in Nigeria. From the review, it could be stated that though snail size serves as a sign for sexual maturity of mates, it is not a good indicator of sexual maturity, especially […]

Unfavourable environmental conditions such as extreme dryness expose snails to acute starvation. This study investigated the effects of starvation on the mineral profile of the haemolymph and lipid profile of foot muscle in the giant African land snail, Archachatina marginata.

The effect of the nutrient composition of maize chaff and pawpaw fruit-based diets on growth performance and carcass yield of giant African land snail (GALS) was investigated. The feeding trial was for 56 days. A total of two hundred and forty (240) grower snails with an initial average weight of 64.06±0.19g were randomly selected into […]

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different protein sources: Soya bean meal (SBM), Groundnut cake (GNC) and Cotton seed meal (CSM) and their dietary levels on growth performance and carcass quality of grower snails. The snails were five (5) months old with an average body weight of 35.62g, the study lasted for […]

This research provides information on the influence of maternal size on reproductive and growth traits of Archachatinamarginata snails from three body weight ranges – large maternal size (444 – 564 g, Treatment 1), medium maternal size (323 – 443 g, treatment 2) and small maternal size (200 – 322 g, treatment 3).

Digestive enzymes activity of gut region of two fresh water snails (Pila africana and Lanistes lybicus) was studied in the Laboratory. Snails were thoroughly cleaned, the digestive tract regions were exposed and dissected.

The albumen gland of giant African land snails (GALS) is an elongated, tongue-like shaped organ that contains the fertilization chamber where the ova are fertilized and very rich in nutrients for embryo development. A total of forty-five (45) healthy snails of Archachatina marginata comprising of the three growth phases were used for this study to […]

SNAIL: THE WEALTH IN THE TROPICS: A REVIEW
This review emphasized the prospect of snail production as a means of generating wealth in Nigeria, especially now that unemployment is on the increase. After the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19) lockdown, the price of foodstuffs (inflation) and the exchange rate of the Nigerian Naira to the US Dollar soared, making many households unable to […]
