ABSTRACT

This paper reviewed the “impact of snail size on reproduction as an aspect of breeding and management of giant African land snails” in Nigeria. From the review, it could be stated that though snail size serves as a sign for sexual maturity of mates, it is not a good indicator of sexual maturity, especially since there is no external sign(s) of sexual
maturity in snails.

The giant African land snails (GALS) being hermaphroditic gastropods start out as one sex (male) and sequentially become simultaneous hermaphrodites. There is need therefore to determine the exact age during which the female sexual organs (albumen gland, uterus, oviduct and spermathecae) start developing in this species. This will enhance selection and productivity.
