ABSTRACT
A malacological survey of Anambra State was undertaken using three Local Governments as case studies. Two species of snails (Achatina fulica and Archachatina marginata ) were found to be commonly on sale in most of the major markets, while the third species Limicolaria were found only in few places.
Snail sellers were mostly women and the number of sellers in each of the market studied was small compared to the volume of goods in those markets. Snails were not found in many of the big stores and supermarkets, hawking of fried snail meat reported in sister states are also not common in these LGAs. Of the challenges facing the industry, incidence of wild fire, bush burning, use of agrochemicals and risks associated with hunting are the most limiting challenges to snail industry.
Numbers of large scale commercial snail farm are still few in the State. It is therefore recommended that snail farmers’ association in the state should do more in promoting snail farming and consumption in the state.
